LITERAL EQUATIONS

Manipulating variables is a difficult task for most of my Algebra 1 students.  Use these manipulatives to help students solve the equation 2x + 5y = 10.  Instruct students to cut out the tiles and place the equation at the top of their paper. Then using the remaining tiles, solve the equation for y.

One activity that my students enjoy is a puzzle.  Prior to class starting class, make copies of the handout below.  Write a message of your choice on the back of each puzzle piece.  Then cut out the puzzle pieces and place in a plastic bag.  Once class starts, group students in pairs and give each student a bag of puzzle pieces.  Students will then match the equation with the correct answer and tape the pieces together.  If done correctly, the puzzle will be a 4 X 4 square, and when flipped over, a hidden message will appear!
